UPDATE: Laptop is back! Thanks to everyone who helped out.
So last night my laptop died. It started losing power and then sparks started flying out of the pin. I’m hoping it didn’t fry the board or something.
Long story short, I lost my laptop during a backup event, which means I only saved about 2GB of data before the lappy died. Of course that 2GB was the entirety of my demo videos.
Where does this put me? I have to send the laptop in, but before I do that, I need to remove the hard drive and attempt to get all the data from the drive (the laptop company will wipe the hard drive clean) before I need to send it in. Downside, I don’t have any hard drive that is big enough to image my laptop, nor do I have enough money to buy a new hard drive and an encasing for the laptop drive. I’m basically out of luck because I have no money.
I also lost my free Amazon Prime Student last week, so I’m going to have to pay more to get the new hard drive here quicker.
Worst night ever.
I’m estimating that I’m going to need about 120 dollars to do this. I’m looking at this drive to use for backups, which is now on my Amazon wishlist.
If you could help me out, that would freaking great.
UPDATE: Thanks to some awesome donations I was able to get a harddrive and the mounts I needed to mirror my drive. I have sent it back to the company for repairs. Sorry for the late update, I’ve been without internet for awhile.
Can't help financially, but you might want to check out http://www.techforless.com; they're a tech clearance house that frequently sells generously sized drives cheap. For example, right now they've got a 250GB 3.5" SATA for $30 (I know, you're using a laptop here, but I assume you will be using a different system to dupe the drive).
The only real problem I've ever had with them is that *finding* stuff is sometimes a bit interesting; their search is powerful, but can be a bit quirky. However, they also integrate with Google Shopping, so that's an option.
Also, that 1TB drive; if you have access to a Costco, they sell a 3TB edition for about $130 (the MyBook Essential).
So bad to hear from your horrible experience – it must be a developer's worst nightmare!…
By the way – I can see that this drive is now reduce to 70 bucks!
Was your laptop a Macbook Pro by any chance?
Mine seems to give me small electric shocks (through the body – on my wrists) when it's in charge and recently my USB ports started playing up (they are close to the charger port) – wondering (scared) if the same is not going to apply soon!
Dude, I love using ThunderBrowse. Although I am cash poor, I am hard drive rich.
I know it is an old post, but I'd like to help.
So sad…
Seagate drives are much better than WD and at Costco you can get a 2 TB for 90.00 after a 30.00 rebate.
Now $69.99!
